Course Name: Hazardous Materials Recognition Course

Duration: 4-6 hours

Course Overview:

This training course expands on the Asbestos Awareness Training course to include additional hazardous materials that are becoming more prevalent within the workplace. In recent years specific hazardous materials have gained increased attention through release of new medical research studies and confirmation of worker exposure to specific hazards that have resulted in death. Because of this, it has become very important for individuals to be educated in the awareness of these hazards.

This course is designed to meet WorkSafeBC current regulatory requirements and provide workers with practical applicable knowledge to hazardous materials maybe present in the workplace and how to perform work in a safe manner that will eliminate any chance of hazard exposure.

This course will cover all required aspects, such as review of applicable legislation, health hazards and effects, uses and applications, personal protective equipment, methods of control and management.

Major Topics discussed:

  • Workplace hazards include: Asbestos, Lead, Mercury, Mould, PCBs, Hantavirus and Silica
  • Health effects of each hazard
  • Introduction of control methods and management

In addition, this course will cover a respirator orientation on the proper use of a respirators and respirator fit testing using a qualitative method such as irritant smoke or Bitrex. Each individual will be sized and instructed on proper donning procedures, and a fit test will be conducted using one of the offered methods.

Continuing Professional Development Credits:

  • 5.0 CPD (Informal) hours by the BC Housing Licensed Builder Program
